Public Legal Information Association of NL (PLIAN) presents: An Introduction to Employment Law

10:00am – 11:00AM

A basic introduction to employment law and the things that newcomers to the province should know about their rights and obligations in the workplace.

 

Presenter:

PLIAN provides public legal education and information services to increase and improve access to justice in Newfoundland and Labrador​. This includes guides for will and estate planning, family law applications, and everyday legal questions. PLIAN also operates a free legal information line providing free legal information to anyone in the province on any topic. As well PLIAN offers a lawyer referral service so that any question we cannot answer, we can provide clients with an opportunity to speak with a lawyer at a reduced rate for legal advice.

AXIS presents: “What Should I Expect in my New Workplace?”

In this presentation, we will provide an overview of general expectations, guidelines and values in the Canadian workplace, as well as some common tips to help ensure that you are confident and successful in your new job.

 

Presenter:

Sheri Abbott is the Employment Development Manager/Career Practitioner with the AXIS Career Services division of the Association for New Canadians. Sheri’s academic background is in Social Sciences and she has more than fourteen years of experience delivering a variety of pre-employment skills development workshops to support newcomers with successfully obtaining meaningful employment in the community.

 

Activate Learning from ABC Life Literacy Canada presents: Building Confidence in the Workplace

1:00 – 2:00PM

Come join us and learn about how you can improve your Confidence skills in the workplace! In this one hour session, we’ll provide sample workshop activities as well as handouts with practical tips on how you can get started.

 

Presenters:

Julia Norcross is the Community Specialist for Activate Learning at ABC Life Literacy Canada. She has worked in education for over a decade and is currently completing her Masters in Educational Leadership at McGill University. She is always looking for opportunities to explore how lifelong learning can create connections and transform our lives and communities, and on that note she is thrilled to be a part of the My New St. John’s LIVE Event this year.

 

Logan St. Croix is the Workshop Facilitator for Activate Learning at ABC Life Literacy Canada.  They have almost a decade of experience in the non-profit sector with a focus on 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion education and mental health advocacy.  Born, raised, and based in St. John’s, they work to bring lifelong learning and skill building opportunities that support the beautiful and unique province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

 

Skills Canada NL presents: Skills for Success

2:15 – 3:15PM

Learn about the 9 SFS & why they are important in work, school & life, with some fun games & prizes!  The workshop will include a slideshow explaining each SFS, games to enhance understanding of SFS, and evaluation forms & prize give aways.

 

Presenters:

Cassidy is Skills NL’s diversity coordinator and is also a huge part of the Skilled Futures programming team! This means she gets to travel to schools all over our province delivering presentations and facilitating workshops for youth in the skilled trade and technology areas. She loves trying new things and is the first in the office to get their hands on our Try-a-Trade kits! Outside of work Cassidy is a lover of all things creative and can often be seen painting, crocheting or crafting (while drinking a very large mug of tea).

 

Kyleigh is the Communications and Marketing Specialist for Skills NL, which means she gets to spread the word of Skills NL all over the province! She has been involved in the local non-profit scene for a few years now and what she enjoys most is getting to know new people and making meaningful connections. She loves learning new things, visiting new places, and spending time with her dog, Louie.

Come join us and learn about how you can improve your Communication skills in the workplace! Taskforce NL & St. John’s Business Information Centre present: Start SmartBusiness Basics in St. John’s, NL

4:45 – 5:45PM 

Moving to a new country can be challenging. As a newcomer, it might take you some time to find your feet and get used to living in Canada. You might decide to open your own business to help support you and your family. With a proper plan, perseverance, and a little help, you can grow your business in St. John’s. This session will provide practical tips and community resources available for entrepreneurs, in addition, provide information on navigating the permit process. Hear real stories from newcomers who have started their business in St. John’s.

Presenters:

Mimi Sheriff lives between worlds and calls Zimbabwe, Ethiopia and St. John’s home. She began her career working with international non-profit organizations before joining the St. John’s tech. industry with Bluedrop Learning Networks (BLN). Certified as a Sustainability Associate Mimi is an advocate of socially responsible business operations and leads these community projects at Bluedrop. With a passion for diverse foods, she is the owner of Gursha, the first caterer of authentic Ethiopian food in Newfoundland. She sits on the Board of Directors for Genesis, YWCA and the St. John’s Farmers Market. Mimi is currently completing a Leadership and Inclusion certificate from the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion (CCDI). She has a Bachelor’s of Law from the University of Cape Town, a Master’s in Gender Studies from Memorial University and a Graduate Diploma in Social Responsibility and Sustainability from the University of Toronto.

Constanza Safatle is a driven entrepreneur and leader with a passion for social enterprise and empowering women. She is the founder of Newbornlander, a commercial lawyer and a leader in immigration and entrepreneurship. Constanza graduated from Los Andes University, in Chile, with a Bachelor of Law working as a commercial lawyer with the Bank of Chile. While attending university she co-founded a entrepreneurship program with a number of community partners, where she co-founded and worked in an entrepreneurship program with women in vulnerable situations. In 2015, Constanza immigrated to Newfoundland and Labrador with her family. For the past four years Constanza has been working full time in the non-profit sector. While working, Constanza built a successful social enterprise- Newbornlander, a company that manufactures baby accessories while creating employment opportunities for newcomer women. She is now the Executive Director of TaskforceNL.
